19 th Annual meeting of Lithuanian Pain Society

The 19th Annual meeting of Lithuanian Pain Society took place on 13-14th of June in Panevezys, the capital town of Aukstaitija that is one of beautiful parts of the country.
The meeting gathered near one hundred participants, who met with the educational team of fourteen domestic and foreign lecturers. The meeting’s motto was “Discussions about chronic pain and quality of live”, and the scientific program consisted of three plenary sessions, two discussion panels, and one workshop. This allowed participants to collect up to ten hour’s activities of postgraduate studies. All participants were granted with the last issue of “Skausmo medicina”, the official journal of Lithuanian pain society.
The first session devoted to physical medicine and rehabilitation was opened by dr Indre Bileviciute-Ljungar, the chairman of EFIC Education Committee. Indre, who is of Lithuanian nationality and FMR doctor and pain physician by specialty, currently practices in Sweden but still keeps strong ties with homeland. She is visiting Professor of Lithuanian university of health sciences. In the session of the meeting she presented mutual projects together with young doctors of our university. An extraordinary participation in the meeting was Dr John Prunskis, American Lithuanian, the well-known pain physician from Illinois. His talk with panel discussion at the venue was the comprehensive overview of healthcare system of US and pain management particularly. Dr John Prunskis is also Lithuanian diplomat visiting our country regularly and always giving consultations both support for Lithuanian pain doctors. Dr. Arun Bhaskar, the pain physician from UK, former president of British pain society, presented his speech at the third session on the topic of non-interventional neuromodulation. Dr Bhaskar’s mission is to introduce new innovative methods of pain management in all Baltic countries therefore, his visits are regular with presenting workshops and giving consultative support.

The memory of Arunas Pakula, the author of Lithuanian pain questionnaire, was commemorated in the meeting. The special panel session “The language of pain” chaired by prof. Kestutis Petrikonis, did show how still important in our nowadays is clear cooperation with patients expressing their pain. And one more extraordinary happened in the meeting. As common for all our events is upload them with social sports programs including the basketball as religion of Lithuanians, also tennis, run events. This time was the first showed chess game on the podium. The match between Panevezys hospital and Lithuanian pain society ended 3:3. This was as symbolic outcome of friendly atmosphere happened in 19th annual meeting of Lithuanian pain society.
